Please Note: This Magento 2 extension is developed and maintained by EcomPlugins and is not an official extension created by XPO. It is designed to help Magento 2 merchants integrate XPO freight shipping services and retrieve available LTL freight rates through the XPO API.

Magento 2 XPO LTL Freight Shipping Extension is a downloadable Magento 2 extension that requires a one-time purchase.

XPO provides freight transportation services, including less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping solutions for businesses.

The Magento 2 XPO LTL Freight Shipping Extension connects your Magento 2 store with XPO to calculate available freight shipping rates. Eligible XPO freight rates can be displayed to customers directly on the shopping cart and checkout pages.

Freight rates are calculated using shipment information such as the merchant's warehouse/origin address, customer destination address, shopping cart weight, product-level freight information, and selected delivery requirements.

If your Magento store ships heavy, oversized, palletized, or commercial products, explore our complete range of Magento 2 LTL Freight Shipping Extensions for additional freight carrier integrations.

XPO API Integration for Magento 2

This extension acts as an integration between your Magento 2 store and the XPO API. It does not automatically create an XPO account or provide freight transportation services.

The extension sends the required shipment information from Magento 2 to XPO to request available freight rates. The returned rate information is then processed according to the shipping configuration in Magento and displayed to eligible customers during checkout.

This helps Magento merchants automate LTL freight rate calculations instead of manually determining freight costs for each qualifying order.

Real-Time XPO LTL Freight Rate Calculation

The Magento 2 XPO Shipping Extension uses shipment and destination information from the shopping cart to prepare freight rate requests.

Depending on your configuration, rate calculations can use information including:

  • Merchant warehouse/origin address
  • Customer destination address
  • Shopping cart shipment weight
  • Product-level freight shipping class
  • Additional product weight
  • Residential or commercial destination type
  • Liftgate delivery requirements
  • Delivery notification requirements
  • Configured shipping rate markup

Available XPO freight shipping rates can then be displayed directly to the customer during the Magento 2 cart and checkout process.

  • Display a custom error message when XPO is unable to return an applicable freight rate.
  • Manage XPO shipping settings directly from the Magento 2 Admin Panel.

Customer-Selectable Freight Delivery Options at Checkout

One of the useful features of this Magento 2 XPO integration is the ability to provide freight-specific delivery options during checkout.

Depending on the Magento Admin configuration, customers can select applicable options such as:

  • Residential or commercial address type
  • Liftgate delivery
  • Delivery notification

The selected options are used when calculating the applicable freight shipping quote. This helps provide a rate that more closely reflects the customer's actual delivery requirements.

Store Customer Freight Options with the Order

Customer-selected freight delivery options are not limited to the checkout rate request. The extension stores the applicable selections with the customer's order information.

Magento administrators can review the customer's selected address type, liftgate, and delivery notification options from the order details in the Admin Panel.

This gives customer service, warehouse, and shipping teams better visibility into the delivery requirements selected when the order was placed.

XPO Freight Options for Magento Admin Orders

The extension also supports Magento orders created by administrators. When creating an order from the Magento Admin Panel, the administrator can configure applicable customer address and freight delivery selections.

This helps maintain consistent XPO freight rating functionality for both customer-created frontend orders and orders created manually by store administrators.

Residential and Commercial Freight Delivery

LTL freight rates can vary depending on whether the shipment is being delivered to a residential or commercial destination. A residential delivery may require different handling or additional carrier services compared with delivery to a commercial facility.

The Magento 2 XPO extension allows merchants to account for the residential or commercial destination type when requesting applicable freight rates.

Administrators can control these options from the Magento backend and, when enabled, allow customers to make the appropriate selection during checkout.

Liftgate Delivery Option

A liftgate may be required when a freight shipment is delivered to a location without a loading dock, forklift, or suitable unloading equipment.

The extension allows merchants to enable or disable the liftgate delivery option. When configured for frontend selection, customers can indicate whether liftgate service is required for their shipment.

The selected requirement can then be included when obtaining the applicable XPO freight shipping quote.

Delivery Notification Option

For freight shipments where delivery notification is required, merchants can enable the applicable notification option in the extension configuration.

If frontend selection is enabled, customers can select the option during checkout, and the selection can be used as part of the freight rate request and stored with the order for reference.

Product-Level Freight Shipping Class and Extra Weight

LTL freight calculations may require product information beyond standard parcel weight. The Magento 2 XPO extension allows administrators to configure product-level freight shipping class and additional weight.

This functionality is particularly useful for Magento stores selling heavy, industrial, commercial, oversized, or palletized products where freight characteristics can affect shipping rates.

The configured product information can be used when preparing the shipment data sent to XPO for freight rate calculation.

Minimum Weight for XPO Freight Shipping

Not every Magento order needs to use LTL freight. The extension allows administrators to configure a minimum shipment weight before XPO freight shipping rates are displayed.

If the shopping cart does not meet the configured minimum weight requirement, the XPO shipping method can be hidden. This allows merchants to use parcel or other shipping methods for smaller orders while offering XPO LTL freight for heavier shipments.

Fixed or Percentage Shipping Rate Markup

Magento administrators can add an additional markup to the freight shipping rate returned by XPO.

The markup can be configured as either a fixed amount or a percentage of the freight rate. This can help account for additional handling, packaging, pallet preparation, administrative, or other freight-related expenses.

How XPO Freight Rate Calculation Works

  1. The customer adds eligible products to the Magento 2 shopping cart.
  2. Magento collects the customer's shipping destination and shopping cart information.
  3. The extension checks the configured XPO shipping rules and minimum shipment weight.
  4. Product weight, freight class, origin, destination, and applicable freight delivery options are prepared for the rate request.
  5. Customer-selected options such as residential/commercial delivery, liftgate, and delivery notification are included where applicable.
  6. The extension sends the freight rate request to the XPO API.
  7. XPO returns the applicable freight shipping rate information.
  8. The extension processes the response and applies any configured shipping markup.
  9. Eligible XPO freight shipping rates are displayed to the customer.
  10. The customer's selected freight options are retained with the applicable order information.

XPO Account & API Configuration

To use this Magento 2 XPO extension, merchants must have an appropriate account with XPO and access to the required API services.

Visit the XPO website for information about available freight services and account requirements.

After establishing your account, contact XPO or your XPO representative regarding the API credentials and access required for freight rate requests.

Once the required API credentials are available, enter them into the XPO shipping configuration section of your Magento 2 Admin Panel. After configuring the credentials and shipping options, the extension can begin requesting applicable XPO freight rates.

EcomPlugins charges for the Magento 2 extension itself. Freight transportation charges, account requirements, API policies, and other carrier-related fees are determined separately by XPO.

Who Should Use the Magento 2 XPO Extension?

This extension is designed for Magento 2 merchants that use XPO for LTL freight shipping and want to automate freight rate calculations during the shopping cart and checkout process.

It can be particularly useful for Magento stores selling:

  • Industrial equipment and supplies
  • Building and construction materials
  • Flooring and heavy building products
  • Automotive equipment and parts
  • Machinery and replacement components
  • Commercial and warehouse equipment
  • Furniture and oversized products
  • Palletized merchandise
  • Other products commonly shipped using LTL freight

Why Integrate XPO LTL Freight with Magento 2?

Standard parcel shipping integrations may not provide all the information needed for LTL freight rate calculations. Freight shipments can require additional information such as freight class, shipment weight, residential or commercial destination type, liftgate requirements, and delivery notification services.

Integrating XPO with Magento 2 helps automate the freight rating process by sending the required shipment information to the carrier API and displaying eligible freight shipping rates directly during checkout.

The extension also helps carry freight-specific customer selections from checkout into the Magento order, giving administrators better visibility into the delivery requirements associated with the shipment.
