Please Note: This Magento 2 extension is developed and maintained by EcomPlugins and is not an official extension created by FedEx. It is designed to help Magento 2 merchants integrate FedEx Freight LTL services and retrieve available freight shipping rates through the FedEx REST API.

Magento 2 FedEx Freight Shipping Extension is a downloadable Magento 2 extension that requires a one-time purchase.

FedEx provides parcel and freight transportation services along with APIs that allow ecommerce and business systems to integrate shipping, rating, tracking, pickup, address validation, and other logistics functionality.

The Magento 2 FedEx Freight Shipping Extension connects your Magento 2 store with the FedEx Freight LTL API to retrieve applicable freight shipping rates. Eligible FedEx Freight rates can be displayed directly to customers on the shopping cart and checkout pages.

Freight rates are calculated using shipment information such as the merchant's warehouse/origin address, customer destination address, product weights, product freight classes, package information, and applicable FedEx Freight service options.

If your Magento store ships heavy, oversized, palletized, industrial, or commercial products, browse our complete range of Magento 2 LTL Freight Shipping Extensions for additional freight carrier integrations.

FedEx Freight REST API Integration for Magento 2

This extension acts as an integration between your Magento 2 store and the FedEx Freight LTL REST API. It does not automatically create a FedEx account or provide freight transportation services.

The extension prepares the required shipment information from Magento and sends the applicable freight rate request to FedEx. Returned freight rates are processed according to the shipping configuration in Magento and can then be displayed to eligible customers during checkout.

This helps merchants automate FedEx Freight LTL rate calculations instead of manually determining freight charges for each qualifying order.

Real-Time FedEx Freight LTL Rate Calculation

The Magento 2 FedEx Freight Shipping Extension uses information from the shopping cart, products, merchant shipping origin, and customer destination when preparing a FedEx Freight rate request.

Depending on your configuration, freight rate calculations can use information including:

  • Merchant warehouse/origin address
  • Customer destination address
  • FedEx Freight account information
  • Shopping cart product weight
  • Product-level freight shipping class
  • Package or handling-unit information
  • Residential or commercial address type
  • Configured freight service options
  • Minimum shipment weight rules
  • Additional shipping fees or adjustments
  • Free shipping rules where configured

Applicable FedEx Freight shipping rates can then be displayed directly to customers during the Magento 2 shopping cart and checkout process.

Product-Level Freight Shipping Class

LTL freight shipping often requires a freight classification in addition to standard package weight.

The Magento 2 FedEx Freight extension allows merchants to configure freight shipping classes at the product level. This helps the extension organize eligible products before preparing the shipment information sent to FedEx.

Product-level freight classes are especially useful for Magento stores selling industrial equipment, construction materials, flooring, machinery, automotive products, furniture, or other merchandise that commonly ships by LTL freight.

Automatic Freight Package Grouping

The extension can combine eligible shopping cart products into freight packages based on the configured product-level freight shipping classes before sending the shipment information to the FedEx Freight REST API.

This helps organize products with similar freight characteristics and gives merchants more control over the shipment data used for FedEx Freight rate calculation.

Before using live freight rates, ensure that product weights, freight classes, and other required shipping information are configured correctly in Magento.

FedEx Address Validation for Residential and Commercial Addresses

The extension can use FedEx Address Validation functionality to help determine whether an applicable destination should be treated as residential or commercial.

This is important for freight rating because the destination type can affect the services and charges associated with a shipment.

FedEx's Address Validation API can validate and standardize supported addresses and, for applicable U.S. and Canadian addresses, can return a business or residential classification when sufficient address information is available.

Important: Address Validation API access and availability depend on the FedEx account and API configuration. Merchants should confirm that the required FedEx Address Validation functionality is available for their account before relying on automatic address classification.

Magento Shipping Origin Must Match Your FedEx Freight Account

FedEx requires the appropriate freight account information and account address when processing Freight LTL requests.

Before using the extension, review your Magento shipping origin under:

Stores → Configuration → Sales → Shipping Settings

The configured warehouse/origin information should correspond with the shipping and account information required by your FedEx Freight setup.

Using correct origin and account information helps reduce authentication, rating, and shipment-processing issues.

Minimum Weight for FedEx Freight Rates

Not every Magento order needs to be shipped using an LTL freight service. The extension allows administrators to configure a minimum shipment weight before FedEx Freight rates are displayed.

If the shopping cart does not meet the configured minimum weight requirement, the FedEx Freight shipping method can be hidden.

This allows merchants to use parcel shipping services for smaller orders while offering FedEx Freight for heavier or freight-eligible shipments.

Free Shipping Rules

The Magento 2 FedEx Freight Shipping Extension supports free shipping configurations based on the order subtotal and Magento shopping cart rules.

This gives merchants flexibility when creating freight-related promotions or shipping incentives for qualifying customers and orders.

For example, a merchant can configure free freight shipping for orders that meet defined cart or subtotal requirements while continuing to retrieve FedEx Freight rates for other orders.

Additional Shipping Fees and Rate Adjustments

Merchants can configure additional shipping adjustments where supported by the extension.

This can help account for expenses such as handling, packaging, pallet preparation, administrative processing, or other freight-related costs that may need to be included in the shipping amount displayed to customers.

FedEx Freight Shipment Tracking

The extension supports FedEx Freight shipment tracking information within Magento.

Administrators can review applicable tracking information from the Magento Admin Panel, while customers can access shipment tracking information from their order details when tracking data has been added to the shipment.

This helps both merchants and customers monitor freight shipments after the order has been processed.

How FedEx Freight Rate Calculation Works

  1. The customer adds eligible products to the Magento 2 shopping cart.
  2. Magento collects the customer destination and shopping cart information.
  3. The extension checks the configured FedEx Freight settings and minimum shipment weight.
  4. Product weights and freight shipping classes are processed.
  5. Eligible products are grouped according to the extension's configured freight packaging logic.
  6. The Magento warehouse/origin and customer destination information are prepared for the request.
  7. Residential or commercial classification can be determined through the configured FedEx Address Validation functionality where available.
  8. The extension sends the freight rate request to the FedEx Freight LTL REST API.
  9. FedEx returns the applicable freight rate information.
  10. The extension processes the API response and applies applicable Magento shipping rules or adjustments.
  11. Eligible FedEx Freight rates are displayed to the customer during checkout.
  12. The customer selects the applicable freight shipping method and continues checkout.

FedEx Freight Account & API Configuration

To use the Magento 2 FedEx Freight Shipping Extension, merchants must have an appropriate FedEx account with access to the required FedEx Freight LTL API services.

Visit the FedEx Developer Portal to review available APIs and integration requirements.

The extension does not automatically create your FedEx account or enable Freight LTL API access.

FedEx states that the applicable FedEx Freight LTL account must be enabled for use with the Freight LTL API. The account number and the correct mailing address associated with the freight account are required for applicable LTL requests.

After obtaining the necessary FedEx API credentials and Freight LTL access, enter the required information into the FedEx Freight shipping configuration section of your Magento 2 Admin Panel.

Once the credentials, account information, product freight data, and shipping settings are configured, the extension can begin requesting applicable FedEx Freight rates.

EcomPlugins charges for the Magento 2 extension itself. FedEx transportation charges, account requirements, API availability, service terms, and other carrier-related fees are determined separately by FedEx.

Who Should Use the Magento 2 FedEx Freight Extension?

This extension is designed for Magento 2 merchants that use FedEx Freight for LTL transportation and want to automate freight rate calculations during checkout.

It can be particularly useful for Magento stores selling:

  • Industrial equipment and supplies
  • Building and construction materials
  • Flooring and heavy building products
  • Automotive equipment and parts
  • Machinery and replacement components
  • Commercial and warehouse equipment
  • Furniture and oversized merchandise
  • Palletized products
  • Heavy business-to-business shipments
  • Other products commonly shipped using LTL freight

Why Integrate FedEx Freight with Magento 2?

Standard parcel shipping integrations may not provide all the information required for LTL freight shipments. Freight rate calculations can require additional details such as freight account information, shipping class, shipment weight, handling units, dimensions, origin address, destination classification, and applicable freight services.

Integrating FedEx Freight with Magento 2 helps automate the freight rating process by preparing shipment information from the shopping cart, sending it to the FedEx Freight LTL REST API, and displaying eligible shipping rates directly during checkout.

Features such as product-level freight classes, automatic package grouping, address classification, minimum weight rules, free shipping configurations, and tracking help merchants manage FedEx Freight shipping directly from Magento.
